History of Champions Trophy-

Originally known as the Mini-World Cup involving all full members of the ICC, it began as a knockout tournament. In 2002, it changed to a round-robin format but remained short – lasting about two weeks. Over the years, the number of teams varied, but since 2009, only the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings participate. The Champions Trophy has been hosted in seven countries, with England hosting it three times. Initially held every two years, the tournament changed to a four-year cycle from 2009, aligning with the World Cup schedule.

Thirteen teams competed in eight editions, with Australia and India winning twice each. The 2017 edition was the last, as the ICC aimed to have a top tournament for each cricket format. Plans for a one-day league in 2019 put the future of the Champions Trophy at risk. Originally scheduled for India, the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup moved to the UAE due to COVID-19, and no Champions Trophy took place that year.

Since 2009, the tournament features eight teams divided into two pools of four, adopting a round-robin format. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semi-finals, with any team losing even one match running the risk of elimination. The current format involves a total of 15 matches, making the tournament last about two and a half weeks.

Difference Between World Cup And Champions Trophy-

The ICC Champions Trophy differs from the World Cup in several ways. Unlike the World Cup, the Champions Trophy lasts approximately two and a half weeks, providing a more concise competition schedule in contrast to the World Cup’s month-long duration. Additionally, the number of participating teams varies, with the latest World Cup edition featuring 10 teams, while the most recent Champions Trophy featured 8 teams.

Will The Indian Cricket Team Go To Pakistan or Not?

The Indian cricket team is unlikely to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will request hybrid matches in Dubai or Sri Lanka. Pakistan has not hosted a major ICC event since 1996.

Since the bilateral series in 2012–2013, India–Pakistan cricket has been limited to ICC tournaments and Asia Cup matches.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has scheduled the match between India and Pakistan in Lahore on March 1 next year, but the BCCI is yet to give its consent to the tentative schedule.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi presented a 15-match schedule, in which all India’s matches will be played in Lahore due to security reasons.

What Is The Stand Of BCCI?

On 6 May, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said that the Indian team will go to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy next year only if the central government allows it.

In the case of Champions Trophy, we will do what the Indian government tells us to do. We will send our team only if the Indian government gives us permission. So we will go as per the decision of the Indian government and the Indian government has not given any official information on this.
